Netflix, once upon a time reluctant about being social is now going to "extensively integrate with Facebook." This sounds exciting to me! The Facebook window is open 24X7 on my laptop, this mean I am online most of the time. I subscribe to Netflix. I watch atleast two movies a week on Netflix amidst the busy school schedule. It is so convenient. Now that Netflix is a part of Facebook, it makes it more convenient as Netflix plans to serve it's customers more socially! Imagine, logging into your Neflix streaming account using your Facebook ID and watching your favouraite movie! When you are done another family member or friends logs in with their ID and looks at their own customized recommendations. This is what Netflix has planned with their announcement of entering the social media world, through Facebook. The company who has taken over the market by being the most forward thinking of the video rental company is attempting to stay one step ahead of the competition once again.
Netflix's integration with Facebook would not only allow each individual user to create their own instant queue, but would also allow users to suggest movies to their Facebook friends as well as share their movie watching history in their Facebook news feed. The new features will also include the ability for two people under the same account to watch one movie on their iPad on the go, while other person will be able to watch a different movie on the television.
Understanding social networks could improve Netflix's famously honed recommendation algorithm. It might also be an opportunity for Netflix to create social viewing experiences. This new strategy of netflix may be inspired by the fundamental shift that social networks like Facebook are fomenting in the society today, changing how companies market their products as well as how they conceive of the kinds of value they create for customers. This makes perfect sence to me as Netflix has recently entered international markets such as Canada. There will be less brand recognition and word-of-mouth, therefore, Social Media is the best strategy to reach the international market. Everyone is scrambling to create a killer social media strategy for their company and this is the right time that Netflix has made this entry into Social media. Facebook and Neflix have similar people visiting their websites, from teenage to middle-age. Moreover, Facebook being the number one social networking, and Neflix being the leading online movie rental company, this will be a great partnership!
